ESH Initiative Review

Holocene

In 2001, the MESH Steering Committee identified Holocene research as a important problem with important Global Change implications that can be addressed within the broad scientific focus of MESH. The Steering Committee organized a workshop to develop focused implementation plans for Holocene research. The workshop was held in August 2001 at the National Science Foundation and was entitled "Cycles and Trends in the Holocene". It was attended by 15 to 20 terrestrial and marine paleoclimatologists. This workshop produced a report that identified the important Holocene research questions, documented their relevance to the US Global Change Program, and outlined an implementation plan to answer the questions. The workshop report became the basis for the Earth System History (ESH) Holocene research initiative (Holocene Climate Variability, Forcing Mechanisms, and Impacts) that was advertised in the most recent ESH call for proposals.
